Today we had a full day in Munich. The day started with Katie, Elodie and I heading off on a "yarn adventure". Ed's wife Lisa had recommended a yarn shop, die Mercerie, not far away, so we decided to check it out. It was fun to have a "mission". It wasn't far away by car or U-bahn, but it would have have been an hour walking each way. We decided to explore the U-bahn so 9:30am found the girls and me prowling the Munich subway system and getting to know it. It works well.
We found the shop without issue and looked around. It was cute and had lots of yarn and books -- some even in English.
After our yarn adventure, we took the U-bahn back to Marienplatz to meet up with Laura and Charlie. We found a spot and settled in at the base of the Mary statue to watch the glockenspiel in the new town hall do its thing at 11am. It's a popular show.
After changing my leftover Czech koruna to euros at Deutsche Bank, we headed to St. Peter's Church. We had to be quiet in the back because there was a mass going on, but then we went out on the side and paid the nominal fee for the privilege of climbing the tower. It's 306 steps to the top and it's an impressive view from top.
After our climb and a brief water break, we set up for lunch. We made our way to the Hofbräuhaus and settled into the beer garden. We got into the swing of it and enjoyed lunch.
The kids got a stuffed bear in lederhosen as a souvenir and named him "Herr Bear".
Then, it was time for the Residenz. I have to admit that I was unprepared for the sheer size of this place. It's a HUGE museum and even bigger palace. Doing a tour of it after a big beer garden lunch is probably not the best plan, but that's how we roll.
We shut the place down and staggered back to the hotel. After a brief rest, I took the kids out for dinner at a small place we found just off the Viktualienmarkt. I tried a lighter dish, sausages boiled in wine with onions. It was quite good.
Tomorrow we're heading to Füssen and, if the weather's nice, stopping at the Zugspitze on the way, because we can.
